Below are four brief film clips of passenger trains running on the W&OD -- when it was, of course, not yet a multi-use recreational trail. This excerpted footage, copyright 1992 by
Mark I Video (which has graciously granted leave to the
Friends of the W&OD to place it on the WWW), was shot between 50 and 60 years ago along the Rosslyn branch and at Bluemont Junction.
In the interests of the still numerous users who have relatively slow connections to the Internet, every effort has been made to keep these clips as brief and as digitally compressed as possible; in the interests of the webmaster (who neither owns his own video studio nor seeks to mobilize for the on-going digital media format wars), these clips are provided, for the present at least, in the
QuickTime format only. The QuickTime video player is both free and it runs on the dominant (tyrannical?) platform as well as the putatively pathetic Macintosh.
After installing the video player, click on an image to view the scene from which it was excerpted. (If you are using a modem, there will be a considerable, unavoidable pause...) The clips may be downloaded, by whatever clicking strategy your browser and/or platform allows, for viewing off-line as well .
